Fill your appetite for design and food at The Room Upstairs

I hardly find myself in Makati. It takes work, an errand or a planned gimik for me to head here. Last month, I excitedly signed up for Heima’s Design Discussion talk at the LRI Design Plaza. I had different expectations for it which is why I’ve kept mum about it. Anyway, since I was going to unchartered territory, I made a conscious decision to have lunch in the area. I’ve heard a lot of good things about The Room Upstairs and I hurriedly went to the restaurant.

The Room Upstairs is a hub for good food, coffee and design. It had a relaxed grown up vibe, not to be confused with an old vibe, I gravitated towards. This will sound mighty weird; I know I’ve been an adult for years already but getting the adult vibe (independent, responsible, mature) still makes me giggle like a kid. Ironic right? The restaurant could very well make its way to being a potential good brunch place and join my list.

Calamansi Mint Green Tea (P110)
I really wanted the Strawberry Basil and Honey Iced Tea but it was unavailable. Y’all know I’m a tea girl and the Calamansi Mint Green Tea is joy!

Tuyo Pesto (P160)
Crispy gourmet tuyo topped on fresh creamy egg pesto spaghetti.
The portions of their pasta may look average but the more you eat them, the more you realize there is more pasta than you expected. When we were mixing our pastas, it was such a joy to see smoke coming from the pasta – talk about one hot plate! I enjoyed the mix of textures of the cheese, noodles and pesto.

Smoked Chorizo and Mushroom Tomato Sauce (P170)
Home-made smoked chorizo with sautéed shitake mushrooms, marinara and basil cream. Served with garlic bread.
Besides their hot and filling factors, The Room Upstairs’ pasta is delish! The basil cream and marinara proved to be the perfect partner for the salty goodness of the smoked chorizo.

Y’all know I’m a sugar whore but I was so full from lunch that I wasn’t able to have dessert. For the food we devoured, it was money well spent. I imagine dishes tasting as delectable and plated nicely as these to be priced higher. Thank you The Room Upstairs for mixing my love for food and design in one roof.

CHECK IT OUT: The Room Upstairs in LRI Plaza, Reposo

Published: Oct 10, 2010 - 8:11pm

You get to choose your own dining area at The Room Upstairs.

The Room Upstairs, the three-year old furniture store and café located in the design hub LRI Plaza, has revamped their menu and their space to reflect a spot that brings together art, food and culture.

The Room Upstairs used to host occasional gigs by music acts Nyko Maca and Mozzie. These days, the café space is strictly just for dining. While the crowd never got too rowdy, owner Ari Peralta shares that they needed more space for the furniture. "Plus, there was always that chance that the furniture might get damaged," he admits.   His worries are not unfounded--the modern and contemporary pieces displayed around the store are just too pretty to be sloshed with wine or beer during a gig.

Seating only a maximum of 35 people, The Room Upstairs has several tables reserved for dining. Two long tables can seat bigger groups, while smaller coffee table sets may be occupied by a group of three. The menu, albeit limited, now reflects the café's philosophy in supporting everything local. Aside from the locally-made furniture (with the exception of clocks and lamps, which are imported), the dishes are all made from organic and locally-sourced ingredients. Signature dishes---such as Vigan Longganisa in Cream Sauce (P160), Creamy Tuyo Pasta (P160), Blackened Dory Sandwich (P220)---have replaced the more generic items which you can order anywhere else. "We want people to come here because of a specific dish that only we have," says Peralta.

They serve good, strong cups of coffee (the Barako and Alamid varieties are available) and the desserts are also perfect for just lounging around and being around beautiful furniture. Currently, their patrons are mostly designers, their clients, expats and students (Alliance Francaise is just across and has an annex in LRI Plaza), but Peralta hopes more people stray from their usual dining destinations and pop in for a go-see. And if you end up liking the dining set or the chair you're sitting on, you can order the piece and purchase it for your home.

What’s in The Room Upstairs

Hello fellow Twitter user! Don't forget to Twit this post if you like it, or follow me on Twitter if you find me interesting.

I have now found a place where i can just relax, unwind, have chit-chat with friends or read a good book.  It’s in The Room Upstairs.  Visited it one Saturday afternoon and i immediately loved the ambiance of the place.

It’s like, i’m just at home in our sala.  The Room Upstairs is not only a cafe which serves good food but it is also a retail shop where you can buy the furnitures inside the store.

Aren’t the lampshades nice? Would you why

The furnitures are so beautiful.

i brought these books to read while having a cup of coffee.  But don’t ask me if i finished reading them

While enjoying the  comfortable and cozy place, i tried some of their dishes.  This Kesong Puti and Tomato Panini tastes good. come with home-made potato chips and costs only Php 90.00. Very healthy indeed

From their pasta dishes, i tried one of their best-seller pasta, the Creamy Tuyo Pasta.  According to one of the staff, they use egg instead of cream. Another healthy food

Of course, they offer desserts too.  I super like this Red Velvet Cake (Php 110.00).  It’s not too sweet, perfectly made that i can have another slice

I forgot the name of this cookie.

Russian cookie (Php 20.00)

And since they serve coffee, i tried their Batangas Barako Coffee for only Php 40.00.  They use muscovado as their sugar in all of their coffee.

Isn’t this place worth visiting? And what’s more, they have free wifi

LRI Design Plaza in Makati is starting to be known as the high-end sibling of Cubao eXpo. It's an art haven, hub for design artists, home of great photographers and now a destination for yummy food, too.

You can find the artist and business dwellers in their favorite hangout in LRI called The Room Upstairs. Owned by Ari and Pinky Peralta, it is an interior design studio-cum-organic cafe found in the center of LRI Design Plaza.

They now serve fresh, organic vegetables from their own farm in Tagaytay and they use locally produced ingredients in their menu. I like their homey approach to food and their design philosophy.

Dining Room furniture on display -- everything is for sale.

The Living Room area showcases Pinky's interior design expertise.

We like the homey designs in this small space.

The cafe is integrated in the design studio. Somehow, it felt a bit intimidating to eat in such a nice (albeit cramped) dining setup.

Check out their cafe menu: The Room Upstairs Menu and Drinks Menu

Mango Walnut Salad (Single - P190). Organic ripe mango cubes with candied walnuts on fresh greens, served with balsamic vinaigrette.

I love eating fresh and, if possible, organic vegetables. We appreciated this since we like our salad with simple ingredients and a light dressing.

Kesong Puti & Tomato Pandesal (P70). Laguna kesong puti, fresh basil and ripe tomatoes in pandesal.

This simple merienda of Kesong Puti pandesal hit the spot. :)

Soup of the Day: Made fresh everyday - Cream of Mushroom Soup (P160).

Nothing beats a fresh bowl of soup on a rainy day... (Pricing is just a bit on the high side, though.)

Italian Trio Panini (Salami, Pepperoni, & Ham) - (P190)

They pay careful attention to the presentation of the food, and they select only the best ingredients for their classic paninis, like this Italian Trio.

Mushroom Aioli Pasta with Chicken (P160).

Their pasta offerings are simple and have that home-cooked taste. You might also want to try their Vigan Longganisa in Cream Sauce or Creamy Tuyo Pasta.

Assorted Russian Cookies (P20 each) and Lemon Bar (P30).

Best of all, they have a good selection of cookies for dessert, which I paired with a strong, black Barako coffee.

Overall, The Room Upstairs is a nice, cozy place to hang out with friends or to discuss business deals. One more great thing about them? They have free and reliable wifi. :)

Full Disclosure: We paid for our meals. The couple who owns  The Room Upstairs is one of our neighbors in our community. We blogged about this not because of that relationship but because the cafe is really good. :)
